Before coming into our care, many of our New Hope Children spent years of their lives living on the streets of Lodwar. A daily meal meant digging through jagged village trash cans to find minuscule scraps of sustenance, gaining more scrapes and bruises from shards of metal and glass than any substantial nourishment. Deprived of water, nutrients and sleep, these children's desperate search for food is more than unsafe and unsanitary. It is terrifying, and it is pained.
Thanks to our donors’ immense generosity, our New Hope Heroes have left these days behind. They now sleep safely on beds with mattresses and wake to clean clothes and healthy meals. But they don’t forget that where they left vacancies on the streets, new children have since taken their place.
When our New Hope Children are not studying with dreams to become doctors, engineers, and pilots, they beg their teachers to take them on outreach trips to visit the current local street children. During these visits, they lend nourishment not only from the food or juice they provide, but from their inspirational words, kindness, and shared faith. It’s hard to imagine what these visits must mean to the children still living on the streets. But as largely forgotten children, it’s easy to image the visits offer a much-needed break in the monotony of continuous sun-baked, desperate days and nights of semi-sleep on concrete beds. The New Hope Heroes’ primary goal during outreach is to motivate, so that one day, these children might join them in a life blessed with education, comfort and security.
As we hope to expand our program and open our doors to more children seeking education, we keep our New Hope Heroes’ courageous outreach efforts in mind. As always, we look to them for unyielding inspiration. We can’t help but be in awe of our Heroes, whose primary concern after all they’ve endured is not just to bring street children juice, but more importantly, to give them New Hope.
