New Hope Children is partnering with Girl Empowerment, a division of Share International, Inc that is teaching young Turkana village women self sustaining skills like soap making, basket-weaving and bread making.
These girls often get married off as early as the age of twelve, against their wills, to older men who pay a hefty dowry (of goats) for their brides-to-be. The skills their learning through Girl Empowerment will help them change their lives, villages and communities for the better.
Known for their beading skills, New Hope has asked these women to make us some bracelets that we'll be purchasing at a fair trade price and selling in the States to raise funds for New Hope. It's a win-win partnership all around.
Above, co-founder RJ Swanson is meeting a few of the girls in the program and discussing the logistics of their beading. Our bracelets are currently being made and should be available by 2014 where you'll be able to purchase them from our catalog.
