Running Water Ahead
Expect Miracles - that's the message I received upon landing in Kenya this August and that's exactly what my mom (who ventured with me) and I witnessed. As we contemplated and fretted over how we would manage to raise the $20k needed for a water bore hole (deep well) to complete the Centre, we happened upon two sets of missionaries that would change our future completely.
Knowing our current water situation is standard for the region but not that sanitary we looked into the cost of getting running water at the center. A mind-blowing estimate of twenty thousand dollars, for the drilling alone, came back to me. I know God can and will provide but I have to admit a number that large rattles the faith right out of your bones sometimes. I had no choice but to pray and wait...
Enter Gene Morden, an American missionary who has lived in Kenya for twenty years working with the Turkana tribes in our region. Then enter Beethoven and his Brazilian team, pictured below, a group of missionaries also working with the Turkana villagers. We met Gene on our short flight from Nairobi to Lodwar when happened to sit next to us and strike up a conversation. We met Beethoven and team on a chance encounter walking through Lodwar town. One minute more and we would have veered left and missed them completely, but as God would have it we ran into them at the perfect time.
Never once in my years traveling to Kenya have I met well drillers. What are the chances that in one trip you suddenly meet TWO sets of missionaries drilling wells in the remote desert region of Turkanaland just when you need a well? What are the chances that each has the rare and exact bore hole drilling machine you need for your water project? What are the chances that instead of charging the $20k needed to drill they'd be willing to do it for FREE?
NO chance. Only God.
Both Gene and Beethoven and team took turns coming to the center to visit the children. Both were touched by God's work and hand on our ministry there. Beethoven has a bore hole drill coming in November and will be drilling for free. Gene has been an incredible resource, connecting us with the right people to help in the process. What's more is they now know each other and will team up to have a greater impact on the region. We had a larger donation come in from a church member which will cover the cost of plumbing - thank you Lyn! When all is said and done the running water project at the center is covered financially. Our Centre's needs are far from over, but this - this mammoth of a project- is covered. Covered!
We are overjoyed! By the end of the year our children will be able to enjoy that which we take for granted everyday: showers and sinks to wash their hands. Our house mother will be able to cook, wash, and fill her pots with running water instead of walking across the property with bucket after bucket. We'll be able to have irrigation to grow plants which will sustain the center, feed and educate the children.
No words can express the relief, the awe, the gratitude...
Expect miracles! Everyday.
